The formation of a waterfall

The Formation of a Waterfall

Waterfalls are usually found in the upper and middle courses of a river system. Rocks are critical to the formation of most waterfalls. They occur when hard rocks overlay softer rocks, (e.g. basalt over sandstone).

The water runs over the hard rock, and over time, carves out the soft stone creating a ledge.
